Coleen Garcia and Billy Crawford’s pre-nup photos shot in Ethiopia quickly went viral over the weekend, but not for a good reason. The soon-to-be-wed couple is in hot waters right now after they’ve been accused of using the locals as props for their pre-nup shoot which people deemed as racist.
The photos angered a lot of netizens pointing out that the photos reek of ‘othering’, because of how the photos highlighted Coleen and Billy as focus, while the locals are kept on the background as mere props.
Billy and Coleen’s prenup shoot is just off on so many levels. I don’t see any [positive] underlying message. It’s like saying, “Oh, look, we’re a fancy couple who can fly out here and make you stand in the background as we show you how privileged we are lol.” pic.twitter.com/kJT6M2HFSF

I am not saying that Billy and Coleen are racists, but only that they disregarded CULTURAL APPROPRIATION.
You do not strip people of their cultural sensibilities just so you could use these people as props. YOU. DO. NOT. DO. THAT.

Don’t tell me that Billy & Coleen’s prenup shoot shows the beauty of Ethiopian people because hello, THEY MADE THESE PEOPLE THEIR FUCKING BACKGROUND. It doesn’t take a genius to notice the macros and blurs!

Billy & Coleen’s pre-wedding shoot concept is disturbing. It’s not about race, but a question of intent. They both looked stunning and could’ve easily showcased the culture of Ethiopia without using the locals as accessories.

The couple quickly defended themselves and aired out their side through a lengthy text message to ABSCBN reporter, MJ Felipe, saying that although they understand where the netizens’ frustration are coming from, it was not their intent at all.

While it can’t be denied that the pre nup photos are beautiful and that the location of Ethiopia is breathtaking, it’s important to note that cultural appropriation is a serious problem that should not be taken lightly. As tourists, Billy and Coleen should’ve been more careful of how they executed their pre-nup shoot.
